Learning Outcomes

The course has as its primary purpose to familiarize the student with modern technologies of wireless and mobile networks. The lectures and laboratory exercises aim to present basic concepts of wireless and mobile systems, their architecture, their functional processes, applications and future trends of their development in conjunction with other web technologies.

Upon successful completion of this course the student / her will be able to:

  • Understand the specificities of mobile networks over fixed access systems in quality and time variability of the channel as long as security aspects.
  • Understand the development of generations of mobile networks and wireless communications.
  • Distinguish the main differences of wireless and mobile communications systems in the level of architecture, access technologies, performance and services offered.
  • Use basic tools for dimensioning the network.
  • Analyze and calculate performance of mobile communication systems in various environments using radio coverage models.
  • Use basic laboratory equipment (spectrum analyzers, wireless modem) study the performance of wireless communication systems.

  1. Introduction in mobile communication systems – historical background
  2. Analysis of transmission in the free space – transmitter description, channel analysis (multipath fading, frequency dependent losses, noise, interference, etc), receiver description
  3. Modulation formats and Mitigation Techniques – description of OFDM, MIMO and spread spectrum principles
  4. Introduction in cellular networks, Traffic in Cellular networks, Handover, RF planning, Network dimensioning
  5. Multiple Access techniques (TDMA, FDMA, SDMA, CDMA)
  6. 2nd generation networks: GSM, GPRS
  7. 3rd generation networks: UMTS
  8. Wireless local area networks (WLANs), WiMax
  9. LTE
  10. Future prospects (5th generation networks, Fixed and Mobile Convergence)
