Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course the student:
- will be familiar with the technologies that support multimedia systems;
- will be familiar with the concepts and data compression principles and techniques as well as compression standards of multimedia data;
- will understand the particular problems arising in the development of multimedia applications and how they are faced;
- will be familiar with synchronization and synthesis techniques of multimedia objects;
- will be able to handle multimedia data files and to design and develop multimedia applications.
Course Content
Θεωρητικό Μέρος:
- Characteristics of Multimedia Systems, Autonomous/Networked Multimedia Systems.
- Data Compression, Entropy Coding (Huffman, Shannon-Fano, Arithmetic Coding), Dictionary Coding (LZW Encoding), Source Coding.
- Digital Representation of Sound, Audio Compression (MPEG-1, MP3), MIDI, MIDI Files.
- Characteristics of Digital Images, Formats of Digital Images, Vector Images, Image Compression Techniques, JPEG, JPEG2000, Fractal Compression.
- Basic Concepts/Characteristics of Video. Color Coding Schemes. Video Compression Schemes. Color Subsampling. MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MPEG-7, MPEG-21.
- Synchronization and Storage of Multimedia Objects. Multimedia Objects Synthesis Techniques.
- Design of Multimedia Applications. Methodology and Multimedia Applications Development Tools.
- Resource Management in Multimedia Systems. Applications of Multimedia (e.g. Audio-Video Conference, Video-on-Demand).
- Encoding-Decoding and Handling of Multimedia Files in Java (Java Media Framework – JMF). Implementing Distributed Client-Server Applications. Sending and Receiving od Multimedia Content via Streaming (Use of RTP). Development of Multimedia Applications using Authoring Tools.
